Venu de la Pennsylvania Academy, Robert Henri arrive à Paris en 1888 et s'inscrit à l'Académie Julian, la voie " obligée " pour venir à Concarneau comme de nombreux peintres étrangers. Il y effectuera deux séjours. Le premier a lieu en 1889. Il y fait ses débuts sur le motif à la manière impressionniste et non en atelier comme il l'avait apprise à la " Pennsylvania académiy sous l'influence encore très présente de Thomas Eakins .A Concarneau, A. Harrison et " Shorty " Lazar le conseillent en amis. Lorsqu'i revient dix ans plus tard il adopte une palette très sombre. Ainsi dans " Quai à Concarneau" ou " le pardon" ou encore " The beach, Concarneau ". Il restera trois ans en Europe avant de retourner définitivement aux Etats-Unis en 1886. Il enseigne à " The Women’s School of Design " à Philadelphie puis à " The Art Students’ League" de New York. En 1908 il fonde " The Eight ", une école d'Art à New York, où il apprend aux futurs artites américains les idées et les technique du  " réalisme ".
