" Georges Inness ne prenait pas d'élèves mais il accueillit Le jeune Picknell dans sa maison et son atelier à Rome en 1872; Aussi, avant son arrivée à Pont-Aven au printemps 1874, Picknell avait déjà passé dix-huit mois avec l'un des plus grands peintres paysagistes américains... Il rentra dans l'atelier de Gérome à l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts, où il ne resta qu'une saison, car, l'été revenu, il; retrouva Pont-Aven et l'Hôtel Julia qui connaissait un afflux d'artistes, et y demeura pendant cinq ans, témoignant son estime pour Julia par des panneaux qu'il peignit pout l'hôtel... Ce fut surtout " La route de Concarneau ", peinte sur la nouvelle grande route menant à " sardineaopolis", mais achevée dans l'atelier de Gérome à Cernay, qui établit fermement sa réputation en France et aux Etats-Unis..."

William L.Picknell (1853-1897)
