Edward Simmons :"...Bien que contemporain de Picknell, Simmons est d'une autre génération d'artistes. Il prit un billet de troisième classe pour la France et arriva à Paris quelques mois après Alexander Harrison. Il entra dans l'atelier Boulanger à l'Académie Julian et peina pendant deux ans avant d'être accepté au Salon. En 1881 il arriva à Concarneau et établit son atelier dans le grenier qui fut mis en scène dans le roman"Guenn", écrit par Blanche Willie Howard de Bangor et qu'il illustra...Simmons épousa le peintre américain Vesta Shallengerger en 1883 et, après la mort de Bastien-Lepage, son ami qui eut sur lui une importante influence, les Simmons traversèrent la Manche en compagnie de Frank et Emma Chadwick. C'est en Cornouailles qu'ils établirent une nouvelle colonie d'artistes, à St Yves près de Newlyn..."

In 1881 it arrived at Concarneau and establishes its workshop in the attic which was put in scene in the novel " Guenn ”, written by Blanche Willie Howard of Bangor and which it illustrated… Simmons married the American painter Vesta Shallengerger in 1883 and after the death of Bastien-Lepage, his friend, who have on him an important influence, Simmons crossed the English Channel in company of Frank and Emma Chadwick.
