IL fait partie de la colonie d'artistes de Grez-sur-Loing en 1883-84 et il est l'un des disciples les plus doués de Bastien-Lepage. En 1903 il rejoint son ami Alexander Harrison à Concarneau et, durant l'été 1904, il visite Beg-Meil à l'invitation de Milner Kite. Il rencontre dans son hôtel la belle américaine Hazel Martyn qui séjourne en Bretagne avec sa mère et sa sœur . En 1904 Lavery revient à Concarneau. John Lavery was born in Belfast in1856, but much of his upbringing was spent in Scotland. He went to Paris in 1881, becoming a pupil of Bouguereau and Robert Fleury at the Académie Julian. He painted at the artist colony of Grey-sur-Loing, 1883-84, and was on of the most gifted followers of Bastien-Lepage. In the late eighties, lavery became a leading figure of the Glasgow School. In 1903 he joined Alexander Harrison at Concarneau, and in sommer 1904, he visited Beg-Meil, upon the invitation of Joseph Milner Kite. At his hotel he met a beautiful American girl Hazel martyn, who with her sister and mother was staying in Brittany .
