William John Leech " An Irish painter Abroad "

des Beaux-Arts de Quimper et l'été 1997 à "The Ulster Museum" à Belfast.
W J.Leech, l'une des figures majeures de l'école de peinture Irlandaise de
la première moitié du XXe siècle , a trouvé à partir de 1903
un foyer pictural cosmopolite dans la cité des thoniers. Pendant une quinzaine d'années
il fréquente régulièrement la ville auprès de son ami Sidney Lough Thompson.
Son art s'y épanouit et c'est avec une œuvre intitulée " Café des
artistes, Concarneau " qu'il obtient une médaille de bronze au Salon des
Artistes Français en 1914. En 1903, lorsqu'il arrive, la réputation de la ville n'est
plus à faire. Une importante colonie d'artistes la fréquente depuis vingt ans, accueillie
par les époux Le Bris à l'Hôtel de France et M. Joyeau à l'Hôtel
des Voyageurs. Dès 1894, Frank Emmanuel écrit aux artistes dans le journal " The
Studio " Vous ne pouvez pas mieux faire que de choisir Concarneau en Bretagne pour
dresser votre chevalet. Si vous avez l'intention de peindre des marines, des paysages, des intérieurs,
des figures, c'est un endroit pour vous. D'autre part si vous souhaitez paresser un mois ou deux,
Concarneau vous en offre la possibilité. Vous êtes certain d'y rencontrer des amis artistes
agréables, anglais ou étrangers dans la ville ou le village de Pont-Aven à 10
miles, et, en plus, vous pouvez vivre royalement pou 5 F par jour ou encore moins ."
Comment ne pas répondre à cette invitation! Depuis vingt ans différents styles
s'y côtoient, naturalisme de Bastien-Lepage, académisme de Bouguereau, peinture de genre
socialisante avec Granchi-Taylor, Intérieurs rustiques de Grün, etc, pêcheurs et
paysans offrent d'intéressants modèles et le port, ses splendeurs. Leech, l'ami intime
de Thompson depuis leurs études à Paris, fréquente aussi Fromuth et Hirschfeld,
dont il réalise un portrait. L 'artiste irlandais suit l'évolution des modes et, de
la " manière noire ", il passe à la peinture de plein air entrainant son
ami Thompson. La palette s'illumine, la touche est vigoureuse et les couleurs flamboient. Après " Intérieur
de café ",
" Chez le barbier ", " Le jardin secret " ou
le " Jardin au couvent ", Leech touche au paroxisme de la manière
fauve. C'est aussi à Concarneau qu'il rencontre Elisabeth Kerlin, jeune peintre américaine.
A suivre l'exposition du Musée des Beaux-Arts de Quimper, un peu de l'histoire de Concarneau
se dévoile, c'est aussi le constat d'une évolution sans retour vers la couleur et la
lumière chez un peintre doué d'une grande sensibilité.

W J.Leech, one of the major figures of the school of painting Irish of first

The Irish artist follows the evolution of the modes and, in " the black manner ", it passes
to the painting of full air taking off his friend Thompson. The pallet is illuminated, the key is
vigorous and the colors blaze. After " Interior of coffee ", “ At
the barber ”, the secret garden” or the “ garden
in the convent ”, Leech touches with the paroxism in the fawn-coloured way. It is
as in Concarneau as it meets Elisabeth Kerlin, young painter American. To follow the exposure of
the Museum of the "Musée des Beaux-Arts" of Quimper, a little of the history Concarneau
is revealed, it is also the report of one evolution without return towards the color and the light
in a gifted painter of a great sensitivity.
