Constantin Kousnetzoff est né sur les bords de la Volga, en 1863, dans le village de Jolnino, près de Nijni-Novgorov. Le contact avec l'eau est déterminant pour sa future carrière de peintre. Elle le fascine. " Peu attiré par le climat méditerranéen, contrairement à la plupart de ses compatriotes, il songe à la Bretagne. Il fait donc l'expérience de Concarneau, probablement sur les conseils de son Maître Cormon, habitué de l'endroit, qui le recommande à ses nombreux élèves. La cité, trop fréquentée ne le retiendra pas, car il est de caractère solitaire. Cependant il apprécie la qualité de la lumière et l'animation pittoresque du port. Il entreprend de multiples études, portraits, petits payssages qui aboutiront à une grande composition, longuement travaillée en atelier, exposée en 1902, sous le titre " les pêcheurs de Concarneau ". Ce premier envoi à un Salon parisien sera remarqué par la critique. Lorsqu'il retourne en Bretagne en 1906, il choisit le nord, où il reviendra régulièrement durant une vingtaine d'années, excepté un séjour en Finistère, à Kerfany, en 1921; un second séjour en Morbihan, à belle-Isle en 1923... Il peindra en Bretagne, cent cinquante marines, près de trois cents paysages campagnards, plusieurs portraits brossés en plein-air, aucun paysage urbain, aucune nature morte ".
